We also welcome applications from prospective students with a background in fine art or other fields. Applicants with relevant professional experience will be considered.

  • Course description
    This intensive postgraduate course will provide you with an opportunity to engage in theoretical and practical research and to develop your creative and critical skills and personal areas of interest in sonic arts. It is designed for students with a substantial background in producing sound-based work within the context of contemporary arts and media practice who wish to extend their portfolio within an academic context.

    Specialist areas of interest within the department include sound for film, composition, sound recording and mixing, phonography, field recording and acoustic ecology, interactive work, sound installations, live performance, radiophonic practices and a variety of cross platform work.There are opportunities for collaboration with students from other disciplines both inside and outside the college.

    The course is part of a lively Sound Arts and Design department with a strong research culture. All staff delivering the course are active practitioners and researchers. There is an extensive programme of visiting speakers and performers and both undergraduate and postgraduate students are extremely active in promoting their work both inside and outside the college. The department is constantly developing new links with other institutions and other disciplines and is committed to extending the boundaries of this rapidly developing discipline.

    Career Prospects

    Students will want to develop both their research profile and creative practice. Upon graduation they may want to apply for a research degree; seek employment in their chosen area of specialism (this could be in one of a number of areas including theatre, film, television, animation, internet, games etc), continue working as a freelance sound artists/musician in a chosen area (which could include performance, composition, sound art installation or curation) or set up their own business.
