  • Objectives
    This course is designed for those who wish to study the theory and practice of Gestalt Therapy, both those intending to gain a professional qualification in Gestalt psychotherapy, and those who wish to incorporate the Gestalt approach into their personal and work lives. It will be of interest to graduates in psychology, counselling and counselling psychology, social work, nursing, and allied disciplines. The course is recognised by the United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy, and leads to professional registration as a psychotherapist. The course integrates theoretical, professional and personal development learning.
  • Entry requirements
    Applicants will: -Possess an Honours degree or equivalent -Possess a professional qualification, in the fields of mental health, social work (including the criminal justice system), counselling, health or education; or have worked in a professional capacity in one of those fields. -Have a level of maturity. The Gestalt Centre is committed to broadening access to the profession of psychotherapy, and welcomes applications from people who do not meet the above criteria. Where this is the case, entry will be considered following the principles of Approval of Prior Experience and Learning, (APEL). In addition, applicants must demonstrate the personal qualities and attributes necessary for training in psychotherapy. These include: -A high level of communication skills, both oral and written -Well-developed interpersonal skills -An ability to cope in stressful situations -The capacity and openness for personal exploration The ability to respond appropriately to feedback -Capacity to learn in a group situation -A personal support base

    Course structure

    The course consists of four modules. All modules are core.

    -Intermediate Gestalt Therapy Theory
    -Foundations of Gestalt Therapy Practice
    -Contemporary Gestalt Therapy Theory: a Comparative Approach
    -Portfolio Dissertation

    Assessment
    Assessment is by a range of methods including essays, class presentations, individual and group case studies and self-reflective essays.

    Career opportunities
    Graduates of this MA are eligible for entry onto the Gestalt Centre Practitioner Diploma, which results in UKCP registration as an accredited psychotherapist in both group and individual work.

    Attendance & duration
    Part-time (eve): 3 years; one evening a week (Tuesday or Wednesday depending on year), plus five weekends and one 5-day residential per year.
