    UK applicants will be expected to have Diploma in Professional Studies (Maxillofacial Prosthetics & Technology) or Degree in Dental Technology with at least two years’ post-qualification technical experience. Overseas applicants should have a dental technology qualification and at least two years’ graduate experience. Overseas applicants will not be expected to have completed the Diploma in Professional Studies (Maxillofacial Prosthetics & Technology) but must have a focused interest in maxillofacial and craniofacial technology.

    - opportunity for students to participate in the use of advanced technology with pre-operative planning and creation of anatomical models from digital data.
    - invited speakers from the Institute of Maxillofacial Prosthetists & Technologists on their area of study.

    The programme provides opportunities for students to develop and demonstrate extended knowledge and understanding and advanced skills including: anatomy, histology, pathology of the dental, oral and facial tissues, research methodology, intra/extra oral implantology, materials science, oncology, craniofacial abnormalities, digital technology. Treating patients through diagnosis and treatment planning, restoration of missing tissues including clinical and laboratory procedures, surgical planning techniques. A research project is undertaken from the second term of the first year to completion of the final year.

    Programme format and assessment

    Modular programme consisting of 180 credits, as follows: 1) Two taught modules, covering the scientific and clinical basis of maxillofacial and craniofacial technology, usually assessed by written examination; 2) One clinical module, involving supervised clinical practice and examined by a mixture of case studies on treated and unseen patients, a clinical/technical log and an oral examination; 3) One research module, involving the submission of a research project report including a literature review, with an oral defence of the research.

    Clinical Maxillofacial & Craniofacial Technology
    (Core Module)
    This 30 credit module aims to produce a highly knowledgeable professional in Maxillofacial & Craniofacial Technology. At the end of the module, you will be able to demonstrate advanced knowledge and deep understanding of the following areas which are relevant to the study of Maxillofacial & Craniofacial Technology: Applied Radiological Science; Applied Digital Technology; Applied Materials Science; Orthognathic Surgical Planning; Implantology; Facial Prostheses; Patient Management; Applied Human Disease; Applied Immunology; Applied Microbiology; Professional Responsibility; Craniofacial Abnormalities & Surgery. You will also be able to form concepts of oral health, devise and support arguments for oral health and reflect critically on your own academic and clinical work. Assessment is by written examination.

    Maxillofacial & Craniofacial Technology Clinical (Core Module)
    This 60 credit module aims to produce a Maxillofacial & Craniofacial Prosthetist proficient in clinical and technical skills at masters level. In addition, to develop an appreciation of the need for lifelong learning, and the need to apply advances in relevant knowledge. On completion of the module you will be able to: Have the necessary underpinning knowledge to confidently manage patients with a wide variety of medical and maxillofacial conditions and to satisfy the clinical, legal, ethical and health and safety requirements of the profession; Understand and practice safely within guidelines for clinical governance; Perform infection control procedures; Communicate on a professional level with the patient, members of the maxillofacial team and other Health Care Workers; Be familiar with the manifestations of anxiety and pain and be aware of the various methods available in their management and control; Manage patients fears and anxiety and empathise with patients in stressful situations; Manage competently medical emergencies at the chair side; Identify and assess patients at medical risk in the surgery and refer appropriately or seek medical advice before initiating treatment; Undertake advanced diagnosis and treatment planning of patients requiring maxillofacial prostheses of maxillofacial technical planning; Have the ability to reflect on your own work (clinical and technical). Assessment is by clinical examination, oral examination and the assessment of a clinical and technical log.

    Maxillofacial & Craniofacial Technology Research (Core Module)
    This 60 credit module provides you with a scientifically rigorous research experience through undertaking a piece of research work and writing a report of the findings including a relevant literature review and appropriate statistical analysis.At the end of the module, you will be able to; Analyse both scientific and clinical data; Critically review the relevant scientific literature; Plan a research project; Understand how to apply statistical analyses; Carry out a research project; Understand the effect of experimental variables; Use information and communications technology; Devise and support arguments for oral health; Present your work both orally and in writing. Assessment is by dissertation and by oral examination.

    Science of Maxillofacial & Craniofacial Technology (Core Module)
    This 30 credit module aims to produce a highly knowledgeable professional in Maxillofacial & Craniofacial Technology. At the end of the course, you will be able to demonstrate advanced knowledge and deep understanding of the following areas which are relevant to the study of Maxillofacial & Craniofacial Technology: Anatomy of the Head & Neck; Material Science; Basic Biomedical Sciences; Basic Pathology; Basic Immunology; Basic Microbiology; Radiological Science; Digital Technology; Scientific basis of Maxillofacial & Craniofacial Technology; Human disease. You will also be able to form concepts of oral health, devise and support arguments for oral health and reflect critically on your own academic work. Assessment is by written examination.

    Two years (one day distance learning, two days at College).
