  • Objectives
The new Environmental Management Programme allows master’s students to pursue both taught (MSc) and research (MRes) degrees in environmental science subjects.
  • Academic title
    MSc / MRes Environmental Management
  • Course description
The course offers a choice of two research pathways leading to MRes degrees, and five taught pathways leading to MSc degrees – these pathways cover a range of environmental science themes and disciplines. Our highly-respected MSc in Integrated Environmental Studies remains available to provide generic training across a wide range of environmental science sub-disciplines.

    Pathways include:

    -MSc Integrated Environmental Studies
    -MSc Water Resources Management
    -MSc Environmental Pollution Control
    -MSc Environmental Monitoring and Assessment
    -MSc Biodiversity and Conservation
    -MRes Ecological & Environmental Sciences
    -MRes Freshwater Sciences

In addition, we now offer more specialist training geared towards specific career choices within the environmental sciences field. Whichever path you choose, MSc or MRes, our aim is to provide you with high class training and a thriving learning environment so that you will meet the demands of employers and make a difference to the world’s future.

Environmental science issues continue to occupy a dominant position in politics, the media and among public concerns. Whether we consider actions on global climate change, the devastating tsunami of 2004, the floods due to Hurricane Katrina, Britain’s looming energy crisis, avian flu, or the threats to biodiversity, environmental scientists are needed to provide the scientific underpinning for informed decision-making.

Preventing these disasters where possible, minimising their consequences and dealing with their aftermath presents the world with complex challenges.

Britain has long maintained a strong position in environmental policy and action, providing expertise not only for problems at home but also offering assistance overseas through aid agencies, government bodies, industry and individual effort.

We recognise, however, that the demands on environmental scientists are growing and the breadth of environmental science has increased enormously in recent years. The Centre is therefore pleased offer these masters courses for master’s students in environmental sciences, funded by EPSRC’s Collaborative Training Account.

The Centre for Environmental Sciences, founded as a Board of Studies in 1972, began its highly successful MSc in Integrated Environmental Studies in 1994. Twelve years on, the Centre for Environmental Sciences has expanded through new staff appointments to offer an excellent learning and research environment (rated 5* in the 2001 Research Assessment Exercise) and its MSc has trained over 250 students from across the world who now hold key positions in the environmental science sector.
