• Objectives
  The MSc in Advanced Nursing has been designed to meet the needs of individual students and their workplaces. The programme has been created in partnership with health service colleagues to ensure that it is grounded in the realities of contemporary nursing practice. The course aims to develop nurses who can practice at advanced level and offers a programme of study derived from full professional practice. You will take responsibility for advancing your own practice, and for documenting your progress in your practice portfolio. Plenty of opportunities are provided for reflection with other students, tutors and clinical supervisors. It is generally the case that course participants enjoy being part of a team of enthusiastic nurses from a variety of professional and geographical backgrounds.

  You are expected to have already attained a certain level of specialism in your chosen field, so the MSc in Advanced Nursing does not take a competency-based approach.

  Course Content
  
  You will undertake the core modules listed below:
  
  -Theoretical Foundations of Advanced Nursing
  -Advancing Nursing Practice 1 and 2
  -Applied Biological Sciences or Student Choice*
  -Evidence for Health and Social Care
  
  You must also complete two of the following modules:
  
  -Research, Design and Practice
  -Project Proposal
  -Principles of Systematic Review
  -Evaluating Interventions, Services and Policy
  -Professional Development for Clinical Leadership
  * The Student Choice module option above means that you can select one 20-credit module from the School of Nursing’s portfolio, which includes over 100 specialist modules. You must be able to show that your chosen module is relevant to the project plan developed during the Advanced Nursing Practice 1 module.

  Finally, you will undertake a 60-credit dissertation in a subject of your choice. This is your opportunity to complete a major piece of independent research under the supervision of an experienced member of academic staff.
  
  Course Structure
  
  The MSc in Advanced Nursing commences in late September is taught on a full-time basis over one year or part-time over two to four years.
  
  The course comprises 180 credits, split across 120 credits’ worth of core and optional modules and a 60-credit dissertation.
  
  We also offer a Postgraduate Diploma in Advanced Nursing – this shares the same taught components as the MSc but does not have a dissertation requirement.
