    Programme

    This two-year Masters programme is offered by the Centre for the Advanced Study of the Arab World (CASAW). Students can apply to this programme through the Universities of Edinburgh, Manchester or Durham. The programme comprises of intensive Arabic language training and area-specific research training. Eight months of the first year of the programme is delivered at Edinburgh. Pending successful completion of this year at Edinburgh, students will spend a further four months of intensive language acquisition in an Arab country. After their return from that country, students will return to their primary institution (Edinburgh, Manchester or Durham) to continue with the second year of the programme.

    Learning Outcomes

    By the end of this programme students will have: * gained the opportunity to learn Arabic language from beginner's level and experience Arab culture through a period of immersion in the Arab world; * developed knowledge of the historical and contemporary Arab World from a range of disciplinary perspectives; * achieved a thorough grounding in modern critical theoretical approaches to Arab World Studies, Middle Eastern Politics and Area Studies; * been introduced to the study of the literature, history, politics and culture of Arabic-speaking countries; * become familiar with key primary texts either in the original language or in translation; * become fully conversant with the methods of scholarly research in a humanities discipline.

    How You Will Be Taught

    The first year of the programme focuses on intensive language training, with students also enrolled in research methods training. In the second year, students will continue the Arabic language training and research methods training, while also preparing for their dissertation. Both years will combine seminar and tutorial work with essays, written and oral exams, and research projects.
