  • Objectives
    The aims of this programme are: * to equip students with appropriate analytical tools to appraise the role of the EU and major European countries in international development and * to discuss how aid and other financial support may effectively be used to advance development in recipient countries.

    This programme is intended for those who work or intend to work in a variety of institutions, such as: * the EU and donor countries’ ministries for international development; * non-governmental organisations; * ministries in recipient countries where aid from the EU or other European countries is significant.

    Content

    You will take four compulsory courses and two elective courses. You will write a dissertation of between 12,000 and 15,000 words, the preparation of which is supported by a compulsory programme of research training.

    The compulsory courses are:

        * Aid and development (CDS)
        * Growth and development (CDS)
        * The EU in international politics and development (Politics)

    And either

        * Comparative European politics (Politics)

    Or

        * Institutions and policies of the European Union (Politics).

    You will choose TWO electives from the following list:

    Courses offered by Department of Politics:

        * Comparative European politics or Institutions and policies of the European Union
        * Engendering rights and development practice
        * European political economy
        * Human rights and global politics
        * International cooperation
        * International security
        * Politics of gender in development.


    Courses offered by CDS:

        * Basic econometrics
        * Development policy
        * Economics of inequality and deprivation
        * Globalisation, trade and economic development
        * The IMF, World Bank and economic growth
        * Poverty: concept, analysis and policies
        * Project planning, appraisal and implementation.

    Entry requirements

    A 2:1 Honours degree, or comparable non-UK degree, in any social science, preferably with some politics and/or economics. Occasionally candidates with other qualifications and/or relevant work experience may also be admitted.
