    This joint programme with the University of Strathclyde provides you with a foundation in the use of social theory in history; introduces you to a wide range of topics in the social, cultural and imperial history of Scotland, Britain, western Europe and the USA; and equips you with generic research skills.
    Content

    Core courses include

        * Social history and social theory
        * Research resources and skills in history
        * Social science statistics
        * Qualitative methods
        * Introduction to social theory for researchers.

    The latter three courses are compulsory only for Economic & Social Research Council-funded students.

    In addition, you will select courses from a list of options available at both Universities.

    Optional courses (subject to availability) include

        * Studies in the history of medicine (two separate courses available)
        * Elites and the state
        * Capitalism in Britain, c 1830-1940
        * Sport and modernity, 1850-2000
        * Women and the family in Britain and Europe 1850-1945
        * American social history in the 20th century
        * Texts and beliefs
        * Research methods
        * Social investigation in Britain from Mayhew to mass observation.
