    Entry Requirements We welcome applications from people who have held an MRPharmS for at least two years. You will need to provide evidence that you are in a position to introduce supplementary prescribing services to the benefit of your employer and patient care. You also require the support of your employer, and a suitable medical practitioner who can act as a mentor.

  • Course description
    This short programme is for people who have held an MRPharmS for a minimum of two years, or who have comparable experience. It enables you to provide independent prescribing services including the development of clinical care plans. The programme is delivered by a multidisciplinary team of pharmacists, nurses and medical practitioners. There are strong links with local practitioners.

    The programme provides knowledge and skills in supplementary prescribing services, including: the development of clinical care plans; on-going monitoring of patients to maximise the effectiveness of patient care; and addressing National Service Frameworks.

    You must have the support of your employer to join the programme. You will also need to provide evidence that you are in a position to introduce independent prescribing services to the benefit of your employer and patient care. You will need access to a suitable medical practitioner who can act as mentor throughout the programme and supervise your practice days (72 hours in total).

    Successful completion of this course will allow you to work as independent prescriber.

    Course Content

    A single, 30 credit module short course in independent prescribing (Masters Level).

    Teaching and Assessment

    Teaching is through open learning, lectures, seminars, group work and structured practical experience and is delivered by staff from the University of Sunderland with some lectures from clinical specialists.

    Assessment is one written exam and one OSCE (practice session provided). Coursework comprises a reflections log and portfolio and competency log of your learning signed by your mentor.

    Six study days and one assessment day. You must attend all six study days. In addition you will undertake a further 12 days (or minimum of equivalent 90 hours) with your Mentor.

    Work Experience

    The Clinical Team at Sunderland has strong links with local practitioners. A multi-disciplinary team of pharmacists, nurses and medical practitioners; who are experienced in the management of patient care, prescribing and disease management, will deliver the course.
