  Introduction
  
  In the past the main aim of animal science was to increase production of food and other commodities. Today’s priorities are different, and research in animal behaviour and welfare is of growing importance. Animal science is now also concerned with non-food domesticated animals, such as horses, dogs and other companion animals. The Department is well provided with modern animal facilities and is home to some of the most exciting and innovative research work in these areas.
  
  Main research areas are:
  
      * Objective measurement of animal welfare
      * Assessment of behavioural needs in domestic animals
      * Assessment of requirements of animals for good welfare
      * Understanding and treatment of behaviour problems in animals
  
  Current research projects include:
  
      * Evaluation of improved housing systems for poultry
      * Understanding of the causation of stereotyped behaviour
      * Cognition in dogs and cats
      * Biological modelling of companion animal behaviour problems
