  • Course description
    This is a degree scheme which is especially designed for those wishing to write their thesis on the topic of bilingualism.  Like the PhD in Linguistics it is designed to follow on from the MA in Linguistics or Applied Linguistics, including the module on Bilingualism.  It includes both subject-specific and generic research training. This degree scheme entails the possibility of the student being part of an AHRC project awarded to Dr M. Deuchar and entitled “Convergence and code-switching in Welsh: a universal vs. a typological model?” All students specialising in bilingualism will also be members of the Bilingualism Research Group attached to the Welsh Institute for Social and Cultural Affairs (WISCA).

    Research Training

    PhD students will normally have completed basic master’s level research training through their MA at Bangor or elsewhere. However, our PhD programmes include both generic and subject-specific research training at an advanced level.

    Generic research training

    Depending on their background and needs, students will register for 30 credits in the university-wide transferable skills Graduate Programme.

    Subject-specific research training

    Students will receive subject-specific research training in the following forms:

        * taking linguistics modules as relevant to their chosen topic
        * attending regular departmental and related research seminars
        * oral presentation to a departmental seminar
        * attending Postgraduate conferences as advised by their supervisors
        * individual supervision (e.g. specific advice on analyses of corpora, transcription, data coding and statistical procedures).

    Graduate Programme Research Training Modules include:

        * Information Searching Skills
        * Information Technology and Use of Word Processors
        * Application of Information Technology to Data Handling
        * Presentation Skills

    The PhD Thesis

    A PhD thesis should be between 80,000 and 100,000 words (300-400 pages) and is intended to be an original piece of research.
