BA English Language and International Relations

  • Objectives The University of Westminster offers a number of Combined Honours degrees that are taught across two departments, English and Linguistics and Social and Political Studies. You will be joining a large and diverse group of students studying in the centre of London at the University’s historic site in Regent Street. These programmes offer the opportunity to combine subjects that complement each other and add to the range of intellectual and personal transferable skills that you can acquire in university study. As well as providing a thorough grounding in the subjects that you choose you will also be able to choose from a wide selection of options that will allow you to shape your course according to your own interests. You will develop your independent study and research capabilities and most of the programmes also offer work-based modules that will enhance your employability. How are the subjects combined? Students on this programme have a choice of study on a Major/Minor or on a Joint basis, which enables a wider variety of choice in terms of subject areas and individual modules within the frame work that provides academic coherence. All courses last for three years.
  • Entry requirements Entry Requirements Those students studying for 3 A levels are required to gain BCC. Students studying for 2 A levels are required to gain BB. International Baccalaureate 30 points Access to HE 54 credits at level 3 Or any other European or international qualification that is equivalent.

    Programme

    This area offers a detailed study of the history and development of the uses of the English Language. It is not intended as a course for students wishing to improve their spoken English, but for students whose first language is English or whose knowledge of the language is already good. There is an introductory module which studies aspects of English such as style and register, grammer and reading techniques and practices advanced study skills. More specialised modules include the history of English, the study of national, regional and multicultural varieties of English and creative writing. Students are aslo able to select modules inlinguistics and literature as part of the range of options.
    This course is designed around a number of core modules which provide core disciplinary knowledge, concepts and subject - specific intellectual skills. These modules progresively equip the student with the intellectual tools necessary for the study of International Relations. It presents a recent history of global politics and a framework for understanding the contemporary global system and the distribution of power throughout the global, national and regional levels of that system. In addition the set offers a range of specialist option modules that enable students to develop and explore in greater depth a range of topics, historical, thematic and contemporary, according to their interests.
