BA English Language and Literature

  • Objectives The English Language and Literature Joint Degree is a new multi-disciplinary programme in which students take modules totalling an equal number of credits in the Department of Applied Linguistics and School of English and American Literature, which has a distinguished record in research and scholarship, and was awarded the highest grade, 5*, in the last Research Assessment Exercise. The programme aims to provide students with subject specific knowledge in English Language and Literature. You can combine the study of language in social contexts equally with the study of language literary texts. Central to the English Language content of this degree is a look at the history of the language, from the Saxon invasions to the development of English as an international lingua franca. In English Literature, you develop a knowledge of a variety of different kinds of literary texts from a range of periods.
  • Entry requirements There are different entry qualifications for each programme. Some programmes require you to have a certain amount of knowledge in a subject before you begin the degree programme – this is called a ‘subject requirement’. Other programmes do not have any specific subject requirements. All programmes will, however, expect you to have reached a certain standard in your education and will ask you to achieve certain grades in your examinations. Most programmes have a standard offer so that you know in advance what you are likely to need. Please note that even if you have the minimum entry qualifications, you are not necessarily guaranteed a place on the degree programme.
