  • Course description
BMus (Hons) Music Performance & Production.

    Course Type: Undergraduate.

    Career Path: Music.

    Course Category: BMus.

    Information

The music industry has changed. Today’s successful musicians are multi-instrumentalists who can produce their own music. They can manage their own projects and capitalise on their online channels. On our music degree in performance and production you will create the music you want to make. We’ll help you establish the career you want to lead.

    Course Requirements:

    • An Access to Higher Education course or a BTEC Extended Diploma will be considered as equivalent to two full Level 3 qualifications.
    • GCSE grade C/4 or above in Maths and English or a Level 2 equivalent (e.g. Functional Skills).
    • We also welcome applications from mature students (21+ years) and those without formal qualifications but with demonstrable passion for and practical experience in music.

    Personal statement:

The personal statement is an important part of your application and is your chance to tell us about your aims in music and why it interests you. Your ability to communicate effectively is important, so the quality of your writing is a factor in how we make our decision. In particular, we will be looking for you to show a genuine interest in music, demonstrated by one or more of the following:

    • learning an instrument either taught or self-taught
    • extra-curricular music activities at school, college or in the community
    • performing music as a soloist, a band member or forming a band
    • writing or producing music

    Audition Information:

In addition to your application entry onto the programme will be determined by your audition and interview. All applicants meeting the minimum entry requirements and whose application demonstrates the capability to complete this programme will be offered an audition.

You will be asked questions on music theory, notation and asked to identify intervals and chord qualities by ear. The purpose of this process is for us to be able to assess what you already know and of how quickly we think you can learn.

    Guitarists, pianists, bassists and singers:
Please prepare two songs of your own choice, typically to be performed without a backing track. The songs must be in contrasting styles to show the breadth of your ability. One tune can be an original but not both. You will also be required to demonstrate a range of technical skills relevant to your instrument such as scales, arpeggios, chord voicings and sight-reading.

    Drummers:
You will be asked to play a range of common grooves, styles and feels such as rock, funk, jazz and Afro-Cuban, straight, swing and shuffle. You will be required to count, play time and perform different fills. Finally, you will be asked to show what you like to play, the time for your chops!

    Saxes, flute and brass:
Please prepare two songs of your own choice with a backing track. The songs must be in contrasting styles to show the breadth of your ability. One tune can be an original but not both. You are welcome to bring an accompanist for the performance if you do not want to play to a backing track. You will also be required to demonstrate a range of technical skills relevant to your instrument such as scales, arpeggios and sight-reading.

    Producers, Songwriters and Media Composers:
You will be asked to bring two songs you have written or produced. Songwriters will be asked about lyrics, harmony and form; producers and media composers will be asked about the hardware, software and instruments you used in the production of your work. You may be asked to perform one of your songs, if you play an instrument. There will also be an assessment of your music theory knowledge.
