BSc Plant Science

  • Objectives This course explores how plants grow, develop, reproduce, combat diseases and respond to their environment. It covers many exciting aspects of modern plant science, including cell and molecular biology, genetic engineering, plant-pathogen interactions, environmental physiology, and ecology. The University is at the forefront of knowledge in these areas, and our Plant Science Division has internationally established research programmes in many areas.
  • Entry requirements Required subjects: two A level science subjects (chemistry preferred) and additional A or AS levels in other subjects IB score: 24-30 (including specified grades in science subjects and English language)
  • Academic title BSc Plant Science
  • Course description BSc Plant Science

    Programme

    Year one

You take modules in Whole Organism Biology, Genetics and Cell Biology, Biochemistry, Principles of Ecology, Plant and Cell Physiology and Genetics with Plant Specialisms. You can also choose optional modules in the areas of ecology and agriculture.

    Year two

Core modules studied in the second year include Introductory Plant Pathology, Plant and Cell Physiology, Plant Biotechnology, Plant Developmental Genetics and Plant Responses to Abiotic Stress. In addition to optional modules in ecology or agriculture, students take a techniques-based module to provide the practical skills for the final-year project.

    Year three

You undertake a research project in plant science which may be either laboratory or field-based. You choose from optional modules including Plant Genetic Manipulation, Plant Cell signalling, Plants and their Light Environment, Plant Microbe Interactions, Molecular Plant Pathology, Plant Disease Control, Flowers and Biotechnology, and Resource Capture by Plants.
