All applicants are required to satisfy the course team of their suitability at interview. An interview will be arranged on receipt of your application form.

Course descriptionWhat does the course lead to?
Successful completion leads to an NVQ Level 1 qualification in hairdressing, with the opportunity to gain employment as a salon assistant and trainee hair stylist.
What does the course involve?
This 18 weeks beginner's course will provide you with basic hairdressing skills:
* Shampooing and condition hair.
* Assist with perming, relaxing and colouring services.
* Assist with salon reception duties.
* Contributing to the development of effective working relationships.
* Supporting health and safety in the salon.
* Prepare for hairdressing services and maintain work areas.
Work experience is essential for at least 2 to 3 hours per week. You will be able to work with Level 2 & 3 students and progress at your own pace. Students are required to wear a uniform during practical sessions once accepted on the course. Teaching methods include: Lectures, practical demonstrations, group activities, tutorials, external visit, guest speakers and other enrichment activities. You will be able to progress at your own pace. You will be encouraged to provide models for your practical assessments.
How much should I study outside class?
This is a comprehensive course that requires a certain amount of home study for both practical and theory each week to complete the course and your portfolio of evidence. Approximately 2 - 4 hours per week.
How is the course assessed?
Assessment is continuous throughout the course. There are 3 main methods of assessment:
Practical – assessment of practical skills is ongoing whilst working in the training salon. For assessments you will be required to work on paying clients.
Oral – you will be asked questions on theory knowledge, usually in a practical situation.
Written – in the form of assignments and written tests.
What books and equipment do I need?
You will need to purchase basic stationery supplies such as pens, paper, and a folder. Photo copy cards and floppy disks can be bought from the Skills Centre or Learning Resource Dept should they be required.
