  • Course description General information

    This well-recognised qualification provides students with the secretarial skills and IT knowledge necessary in today's world. Although specifically legally oriented, the administration and communication skills and could easily be transferred to any office environment. Students will gain valuable skills and knowledge relating to the areas of Probate, Conveyancing, Litigation (civil and criminal), Family and Corporate law, and will be able to produce a range of documents used in these areas. Audio typing skills are included.

    Course content

    Legal word processing: you will develop sound text production skills which will enable you to prepare and produce a range of documents such as wills, conveyances, agreements and divorce petitions, as well as general office documents such as letters, memos, reports, minutes of meetings, fax cover sheets and forms.

    Administration: administration skills are wide and varied. You will cover topics such as how a Bill becomes an Act of Parliament, court structures, administration in an office environment as well as various aspects of working in the legal profession.

    Communication skills: communication is vitally important in any workplace. Amongst other topics, you will learn how to communicate effectively with colleagues as well as clients, and how to deal with difficult situations.

    Audio skills : audio work is an important skill which is widely used in legal offices. You will have the opportunity to develop these skills at your own pace. Keyboarding/touch-typing: this is a vital skill for a secretary/administrator. Students have access to a touch-typing programme and are encouraged to develop these skills.

    Teaching and assessment

    Students will complete two assignments at the end of each module. These are internally marked by tutors and externally verified by City & Guilds to ensure that delivery of the course meets nationally recognised standards.

    Progression

    With this qualification students enhance their opportunity of securing employment in a variety of environments including solicitors, courts, banking, insurance and large commercial concerns which operate their own legal departments, as well as local government.
