Graduate Certificate-Diploma in Design for Visual Communication

  • Objectives This course aims to prepare you for postgraduate research practice and study and/or career opportunities within the visual communication design industries.
  • Entry requirements Graduate Certificates and Diplomas have been specifically designed for students who already have a first degree and wish to progress to a postgraduate course but need a bridging programme to build confidence and skills. The course is equally suited to those wishing to pursue a more specialist or intensive skills course in an area related to their first degree.
  • Academic title Graduate Certificate/Diploma in Design for Visual Communication
  • Course description Graduate Certificate in Design for Visual Communication

The Certificate comprises two specialist units - Strategies for Visual Research and Design Application. These combine with a choice of two elective units from:

    -Information Design
    -Typo/Graphic Design
    -Image-based Design

Strategies for Visual Research and Design Application operate together, allowing you to establish a critical framework and personal position in relation to the set and self-initiated work that you produce.

Strategies for Visual Research demonstrate, through seminars, lecture presentations and workshops, a range of fundamental research and analytical methodologies. Design Application will help you to relate research and analysis to practical outcomes through a developmental approach.

The elective programme encourages particular emphasis on your study. For example, Typo/Graphic Design focuses on word-based communication and its relationship to language. Image-based Design considers the importance of image in conveying messages; Information Design is concerned with the selection, organisation and presentation of information so that it is understandable to an intended public.

Graduate Diploma in Design for Visual Communication
The Graduate Diploma incorporates the programme of work undertaken on the Graduate Certificate course as an overall coordinated programme of study. The Diploma phase extends and applies the previous study undertaken on the Certificate phase through the Diploma’s Research Methods and the Research in Practice unit. During the Research Methods unit students are introduced to and evaluate a range of potentially appropriate research methodologies. The Research in Practice unit enables you to define a major project in which you can apply research methodologies to a specialist field of study. The Diploma provides students with a strong portfolio with which to set out a particular career or serves as excellent preparation for Master’s level study.

    Entry Requirements

Applicants are required to have a degree in a related subject. International students require English to IELTS 6.5.
