Información

The School of Civil Engineering and the Environment is a world-class centre for research and education in civil and environmental engineering and applied environmental science. It is a friendly and welcoming place to study and work, with a vibrant and dynamic atmosphere.

We work with and recognise the needs of industry, government and regulatory authorities, and focus particularly on the environmental and societal impacts and benefits of civil and environmental engineering and applied environmental science.

The School of Civil Engineering and the Environment hosts the Centre for Environmental Sciences (CES) – a collaborative enterprise operating across the University, with inputs from the Schools of Biology, Geography, and Ocean & Earth Science, as well as the CES’s home school of Civil Engineering and the Environment.

The School offers undergraduate programmes in civil engineering, civil engineering with architecture, environmental engineering and environmental science, and taught postgraduate programmes in areas of research strength and/or particular expertise.

Our MSc programmes are linked to areas of current or developing research strengths, and are designed both to contribute to the professional development of engineers and environmental scientists and to enable graduates with first degrees in cognate disciplines to qualify to work as specialist engineers or environmental scientists. In addition to the degree of PhD by research, we offer an Engineering Doctorate (EngD) in Transport Infrastructure, Knowledge & Systems Engineering.

Our research utilises strengths in core engineering and environmental science disciplines to address real-life problems. We have a high level of research activity and income, and in Civil Engineering, we were awarded the top grade (5*) in the 2001 RAE. Our research is currently organised into four discipline-based Divisions covering the Environment, Hydrodynamics, Infrastructure and Transportation. However, much of our research is application focussed, with staff working together in interdisciplinary application based research Centre or Groups that cut across the Divisions.

The School of Civil Engineering and the Environment is housed in modern offices on the University’s Highfield campus. Our main laboratory block has all the usual facilities including laboratories for heavy structures, model structures, geotechnical engineering and soil mechanics, environmental engineering and science, and materials testing. Since 1999 we have completely refurbished our environmental, geotechnical, and hydraulics laboratories. The new facilities include a vehicle simulator for understanding driver behaviour, hydraulics flumes, a temperature-controlled geotechnical element testing laboratory, an advanced environmental analytical capability, and large-scale testing cells for waste and leachate experiments. We have developed a state-of-the-art fully instrumented vehicle for field based transport research – one of the few of its type in the world.
