MA Communication Design

  • Objectives MA Communication Design enables you to specialise or take a cross-disciplinary approach to studying and shaping your future career. It provides the opportunity to develop your skills and knowledge in order to engage successfully with evolving communication environments and contexts. It has an ethos of experimentation, creativity, risk taking, research and authorship, combined with in depth practice, contextual theory and industry relevance. It aims to encourage students to design and author creative communications that are delivered and produced using inventive and diverse combinations of digital and traditional media for a diverse range of functions and contexts.
  • Entry requirements Entry requirements Normally a 2:1 honours degree or above in a relevant subject and submit or present a portfolio of your work. Applicants with lower grades, accredited prior learning and/or appropriate professional experience may also be considered.

  • Course description General programme structure

    The programme has an ethos and a structure that encourages experimentation, creativity, risk taking, research and authorship, combined with in-depth practice, contextual theory and industry relevance.

    During the first two practice-based modules participants are encouraged to design and author creative communications that are delivered and produced using inventive and diverse combinations of digital and traditional media for a range of functions and contexts. This will focus your direction of study.

    Specialist communication designers can identify opportunities and cross-overs for their own specialism within a broader communication design context and develop their practice through alternative perspectives and inputs, before focusing on their major communication design project. 

    Similarly cross-communication designers have the opportunity to investigate the breadth and potentials of cross-disciplinary communication design before embarking on their practice-based major communication design project.

    Detailed programme structure

    The programme comprises five modules. 

    -Practice 1, orientation and experimentation
    -Theory & contexts 1, orientation & evaluation
    -Practice 2, experimentation & focus
    -Theory & contexts 2, evaluation & focus
    -Major communication design project plus report

    The first four modules allow you to progressively contextualise, position and develop your practice, providing a basis for the final module which offers an opportunity to produce a substantial piece of Communication Design research.

    The first four modules provide a foundation for the fifth and final module. Allowing you to progressively position and develop your creative practice through the exploration of a range of Communication Design practices and theories. The modules are supported by a series of lectures, seminars and tutorials.

    The final module provides the opportunity to engage in negotiated study to produce a substantial piece of self initiated research in your chosen Communication Design area, in the form of a major Communication Design Project plus a report.
