MLitt Gaelic with Scottish Studies

  • Course description MLitt: 12 months full-time; 24 months part-time

    PgDip: 9 months full-time; 18 months part-time

    This programme cuts across traditional disciplinary boundaries and provides the opportunity to hone Gaelic language skills (especially in a scholarly register) for those with an advanced grasp of Scottish Gaelic, combined with specialist research courses. Teaching is conducted in seminars and in individual tutorials with acknowledged experts in the field of modern Scottish history and literature (in English, Scots and Gaelic). Over half of the programme will be Gaelic-medium.

    Content

    Core courses:

        * Advanced Gaelic language skills
        * Issues, ideologies and institutions of modern Scotland
        * Core structures of Scottish culture.
          Specialist options are individually tailored courses enabling you to study with a practising researcher in their field of expertise. Possible areas of research include:
        * Gaelic place-names
        * Gaelic linguistics
        * 19th century Highlands
        * 20th century Gaelic poetry.

    All students taking the MLitt complete a dissertation in Gaelic on a research topic under the supervision of a member of staff with an interest in your chosen field.
