The course is offered via full-time, part-time attendance, attendance-free distance learning (two or three years) and mixed-mode study. Students who are studying whilst working full-time can also opt to reduce the number of modules studied per year and increase the study period to a maximum of six years. The main start date is at the beginning of October (there are two additional starts at the beginning of January and May)
Many of our part-time and distance learning students are in highly demanding employment. To ensure that these students can cope with their studies in addition to their work commitments they can opt to reduce the level of study per year and increase the study period to a maximum of six years. Thus, they can gain a respected postgraduate degree, whilst contributing to the CPD requirements of their professional bodies, without the sacrifice of a study break in their careers.
Students typically complete a coursework assignment for each module studied; and/or sit module examinations in April of each year of study; and complete the work on their dissertation or project report from May to September. Arrangements can be made for distance learning students to sit exams at a number of centres throughout the world.
Distance learning Students on this course receive comprehensive module study packs by post. A PC with e-mail and Internet access is recommended for these students to enhance the learning experience offered by this course.
Overview
For the MSc, students undertake eight taught modules plus the research dissertation. Students on the Diploma course take the eight modules, plus the project report. Students can opt to complete a total of six modules and graduate with the Heriot-Watt University Postgraduate Certificate. Each taught module requires 120 hours and the dissertation requires 840 hours.

Students choose a topic for their dissertation/project report that aligns with the research interests of staff in the School and/or relates to aspects of their employer; or interests that they wish to develop further.
