  • Entry requirements
    This course is designed for young people (16-19 years old)who are interested in developing childcare skills, and want to pursue a career in that field. It is particularly aimed at students who have completed an Entry Level course at City and Islington College and have more of a practical than academic interest and ability. We are giving priority to students with learning difficulties, who have successfully completed our induction programs and shown talent and enthusiasm as well as responsible behavior in the classroom and placement. Students who have completed an Entry or Induction programme, and have shown the right attitude are given priority over any new applicants.
  • Course description
    What is this course about?
    You will study a City & Guilds qualification aimed at developing a wide range of child care skills. Assessment will be mainly practical with an evidenced based portfolio, coursework and set tests/tasks, as well as Key Skills qualification.

    What do I need to get on the course?
    Applicants need to demonstrate an excellent attitude and mature, responsible and safe behaviour, certified by references with total commitment shown throughout induction /entry programme. You will need a strong interest in child care, and the ability and willingness to work hard.

    What will I study?

    You will attend training at College and through a work placement each week, usually for two days at College and three days in your placement. Training covers aspects of children s care, learning and development including:
    - keeping children safe
    - supporting children s development, play and learning
    - supporting routines for children while in placement
    - encouraging positive behavior
    - developing and promoting positive relationships
    - reflecting and developing your own practice
    - protecting and promoting children s rights
    - paediatric fist aid
    - HIV awareness
    - equality and diversity
    - health and safety
    # key Skills covering Application of number, Communication and IT
    The rest of your week is spent `on the job  in your workplace where you ll acquire practical skills from child care professionals

    What qualification will I get?
    As well as an NVQ Level 2 in Children s Care, Learning and Development, you ll gain strong interpersonal and practical caring skills along with practical knowledge. You`ll acquire experience whilst enjoying participating in a real work setting with children and parents. You will undertake practical activities and learn about respecting people and cultures. After your apprenticeship, you will be qualified to work with children up to age 16 in a variety of settings and roles

    What can I do after the course?
    Once qualified, we will offer you support and encouragement if you wish to progress onto one of our advanced courses such as the Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship or NVQ level 3 in child care to become a nursery nurse or playgroup/crèche leader. These courses take between 18 and 20 months. Beyond this, you can progress to a Level 4 qualification and a management role. From there we can help you progress onto a higher education course such as a foundation degree
