  • Course description
    What is the course about?

The course is about history of Byzantine art. During three one and a half hour long sessions we will visit the show to explore the artistic achievements of Byzantium over the centuries.

    What topics will we cover?

During the three sessions we will explore the development of Byzantine art over the centuries by looking at and discussing a selection of works of art in the exhibition. The course will focus on manuscripts, icons and liturgical objects.

The course aims to help students understand the Royal Academy exhibition on Byzantine art.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

    1. Understand the main themes of the Royal Academy Byzantine exhibition.
    2. Explore Byzantine art with greater confidence

    What level is the course?

The course is suitable for beginners; you do not need to have studied art history before. However, it will also be suitable for students with some knowledge of the subject.

    How will I be taught?

There will be a guided tour round the exhibition with informal group discussion as we go.
Are there any other costs (e.g. certification, materials, equipment or books I need to buy)?

    No.

    What feedback will I get?

All students complete a ‘statement of learning’ form at the beginning and end of the course to assess their achievement. You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

Will I have a chance to give my views on the course?

Yes, please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?
