For young people aged 16-18 who wish to pursue a career as a dispensing optician, or progress onto higher education to study optometry What do I need to get on the course? 5 GCSEs at grade C or above, including maths or physics, and either English Language or English Literature, and one other science-based subject, or an equivalent qualification.

    This course covers all the topics required for the professional examinations of the Association of British Dispensing Opticians, including optics, ophthalmic lenses, mathematics, spectacle frames, anatomy and physiology, visual optics, dispensing and ophthalmic instruments

    # Spectacle making.

    The spectacle lens and spectacle frame making contents of the syllabus for each course have been approved by the Worshipful Company of Spectacle Makers, the traditional Livery Company of the City of London actively involved in the training of Optical Technicians and Optical Receptionists.

    Dispensing Opticians who have successfully completed their professional examinations are eligible to apply for admission to the freedom of the Worshipful Company of Spectacle Makers. This carries with it the privilege of nomination for admission to the freedom of the City of London as a "Spectacle Maker".

    What can I do after the course?
    Upon completion of the Dispensing Course some students apply for admission to various Universities for admission to the first year of the degree course in optometry.

    Such applications are made through UCAS and if supported by exemplary progress in the Dispensing Course are frequently successful. The college will provide support in completing such applications and will provide references if required.
