  • Course description

Have you always wanted to make jewellery but been put off by the cost of metals, tools and complex equipment? Then our new wirework jewellery course is for you. Take a reel of wire (silver plated, copper, brass, coloured or aluminium) and a pair of pliers and you too can create some stunning pieces of jewellery.

Suitable for beginners and those who possess previous experience in jewellery making, this course will progress through basic knowledge of wires and pliers to making small simple pieces, which can be built into all your items of jewellery. As your confidence grows with experience of handling the wires, you will tackle larger and more intricate projects. You will also cover knitting and crochet of wire and designing jewellery.

You will learn about the different types of jewellery making tools and how to use them safely, and explore the use of mixed media such as felt, beads, lace and leather that could be added to designs if you wish. All items of jewellery are possible, from rings to brooches and bracelets to pendants. You will cover making all your own jump rings, clasps and ear wires so your pieces are completely hand made.

Incorporating health and safety aspects of using pliers and cutting tools, you will be introduced to the basics of working with wire and other pieces of equipment that are essential. Having experimented making small units and building items, you will move onto more complex projects at your own pace.

You will be introduced to constructing intricate jewellery pieces, and presented with multi-strand work, hammering and creating effects on the wire. You will investigate 3-Dimensional work, such as making wire beads, bracelets and earrings.

    What you need to bring

Equipment will be available to use but your own pair of jewellery round nosed pliers is the first item you may wish to purchase from a bead or craft store. Wire will be available to purchase from the tutor and you will be given a suppliers list at the first lesson, if you wish to source your own.
