  • Objectives
    The School has an established international reputation as a centre of excellence for postgraduate studies in Fashion and related subjects. Contemporary, vibrant and diverse, Nottingham is renowned for being the business, cultural and fashion centre of the East Midlands region. The philosophy of the course is to provide talented individuals with an environment in which personal and professional aspirations can be fulfilled. The course gives students the opportunity to develop their individual specialism at an advanced level, by exploration and experimentation with new approaches, via a self-initiated research project (subject to negotiation with their tutor), within a dynamic postgraduate community; supported by exceptional staffing facilities, contemporary postgraduate studio space, and modern technical resources. Overseas travel, to enhance the students understanding of international fashion markets, is also available. Students are actively encouraged to develop professional relationships with UK and international fashion industries and agencies where appropriate. All postgraduate courses located within Fashion Futures have been structured to allow students to consider career opportunities in a range of creative, fashion related industries. Students are encouraged to be expressive and communicate concepts via a range of exciting mediums. Whether wishing to set up a business, work as a consultant or practitioner, or wanting to continue their professional development in Fashion, even then the range of individually agreed activities incorporated in the course allows students to select the outcome of their choice.
  • Entry requirements
    Entry requirements Prospective applicants should be (or about to become) graduates of a British university or equivalent institute of Higher Education. Preference will be given to good honours graduates although exceptional applicants from a non-academic background will also be considered. If applying for a design specialisation, you are also required to show a professional portfolio of work.

  • Course description
    Assessment for module one is 100% submission and presentation of a learning agreement for module two. Assessment for module two is individually negotiated with the programme team, and may include a variety of possible outcomes such as a personal thesis, range of coursework activities, prototypes or theoretical models, the creation of a business proposal etc.

    Resources and facilities
    Each course has a shared studio base with access to an IT/CAD suite (the Digital Arts lab) for postgraduate use, incorporating recent updates of relevant hardware and software. Design students also have access to traditional fashion workshops for manufacturing, subject to an appropriate health and safety induction.

    Study routes
    The course is one year full-time, and commences each September.

    Special benefits
    The hybrid nature of course located within Fashion Futures allows students to work closely with others within the same subject discipline. It is hoped that close collaborative activities will result in the possible formation of companies and complimentary solutions. The team will work closely with each student to help secure any Intellectual Property Rights resulting from the course activities.

    Research opportunities
    Each course encourages students to engage with real issues and external connections, and would support links with other institutions and external agencies through collaborations and research activities.

    Course content
    The course, which commences annually from September, runs for a year and consists of module One (60 Credits) and module two (120 Credits).

    Module one, which lasts approximately 12 weeks, comprises school related activities (66%) and subject related activities (33%). It provides school related activities pertinent to the wider needs of the individual in relation to progression, support, academic and community issues in postgraduate study. The subject related activities are pertinent to the three pathways which comprise fashion futures, resulting in a negotiated student learning agreement for activities and support in Module Two. Students have the opportunity to migrate to any of the three courses within fashion futures, in consultation with the programme team.

    Module Two, which immediately follows module one and lasts approximately 28 weeks, comprises the core teaching and learning activities for MA Fashion Marketing, MA Fashion Promotion and MA Fashion Design as agreed in module one.
