  • Objectives
    The programme offers a broad introduction to many of the key concepts and theories which underpin language teaching. It develops your knowledge of language and language study, and also examines theories which might lie behind your teaching practices. Throughout the programme, you are encouraged to reflect upon the relationship between theory and practice in your own professional context. The programme will also help you to become aware of the personal, social, and political consequences of your work as an English language teacher in your home country. The programme aims to: * develop your knowledge and understanding of the English language; theories of second language learning/acquisition; and key principles and techniques which underpin English language teaching. * develop your ability to appraise, evaluate and synthesize theories and ideas surrounding English language teaching and learning. * develop your capacity to reflect on the social and political contexts within which you may conduct your professional activities. * Equip you with the ability to engage in continuing practice-based research. * develop your knowledge and understanding of research methodology and plan and undertake a Master's- level dissertation project.

    COURSE INFORMATION

    The Division of English and Creative Writing offers an MA in TESOL that can be taken full-time over one year (12 months).

    This MA programme is designed for inexperienced teachers at the start of their teaching career or for people who wish to become teachers of English language but who have no teaching experience.

    Applications are welcomed from both home and international students.

    EL0718 The Professional Practice of TESOL (CORE, 30 Credits)

    EL0719 Language and Gender (OPTION, 30 Credits)

    EL0722 MA Applied Linguistics Independent Study (OPTION, 30 Credits)

    EL0725 Language Linguistics and Approaches to Language Teaching (CORE, 30 Credits)

    EL0726 Language Linguistics and Classroom Language Learning (CORE, 30 Credits)

    EL0727 Critical Research Skills (non-credit bearing) (OPTION, 0 Credits)

    COURSEWORK AND ASSESSMENT

    Students take 6 compulsory core modules after which they complete a dissertation under supervision. There are no option modules on the MA TESOL.

    Each taught module requires an estimated 200 hours of work of which 24 hours is class contact time.

    Modules are assessed through a mix of written assignments, oral presentations and/or examinations. The Master's dissertation is assessed by a piece of written work of up to 15000 words.

    SELECTION
    Applicants' prior qualifications and any relevant experience will be considered for entry on to the programme. Each case will be considered on its individual merits.

    CAREERS
    There is a worldwide demand for highly qualified English language teachers. There is also constant demand both in the UK and overseas for graduates in other language related professions, such as the media, the helping professions, communication, publishing and editing.
