  • Objectives
    This programme is for those interested in understanding and developing individual and organisational careers. It would be a good preparation if you would like to move into adult career counselling and other career management roles, such as mentoring and coaching. It will also be relevant if you want to develop expertise in career management. It is particularly appropriate for human resource practitioners and consultants, training managers and guidance workers. Through a programme of taught modules and career counselling skills training, you will gain a theoretical grounding, complemented by practical training. Career counselling training includes in-depth, face-to-face practice and case discussion. The programme attracts individuals working in a wide range of settings and organisational contexts, and provides excellent opportunities for peer learning and networking.
  • Entry requirements
    Entry requirements Honours degree in any subject and at least three years’ relevant work experience. Non-graduates with professional qualifications of degree standard may also be considered.

  • Course description
    The programme is based on the MSc Career Management and Counselling and includes most of its taught modules and the popular career counselling skills training, without the research element and dissertation required for the MSc. 

    You complete six taught modules, some core and some optional, over two years, and undertake training in career counselling skills.

    Core modules include:

    -Life Career Development
    -Career Counselling and Coaching. 

    Other modules may include:

    -Work and Well-Being
    -Motivation and Performance
    -Selection and Assessment
    -Training and Development
    -Leadership and Human Resource Management.

    Teaching

    Theoretical components are taught mainly through network learning (i.e. tutor-supported computer conferencing, based on specifically prepared course texts), for which you will need access to a computer and modem. 

    Career counselling skills are taught mainly through workshops of 14 days over two years, with one-to-one feedback in skills development from experienced tutors. Access to suitable clients is required for this work.

    Assessment
    Essays, tape transcripts and written examinations.
