Objectives
This is the conversion course for graduates in subjects other than law who intend to become solicitors or barristers. It is recognised by the Law Society and the Bar Council as satisfying the requirements of the Academic Stage of Training.
Entry requirements
Applicants should normally possess an Honours degree in any subject other than law. Applicants without a first degree but with appropriate work experience will be considered.

Course description
Programme
The GDL begins with a three week induction, introducing the principal features of the English legal system, developing legal research skills and demonstrating the role of information technology in the study of the law. Students then study the seven prescribed Foundation subjects:
-Criminal Law
-Equity and the Law of Trusts
-European Community Law
-Property Law
-Public Law
-The Law of Contract (Obligations I)
-The Law of Tort (Obligations II).
As stipulated by the Law Society and the Bar Council, students will be introduced to an additional area of legal study and be required to submit a longer piece of assessed written coursework relating to that area. Students who successfully complete all of the GDL assessments at their first sitting will be offered a place on the De Montfort Law School Legal Practice Course (LPC).
