  • Course description
    This course provides a programme of studies covering both the business and strategy elements of marketing. It has been developed in consultation with leading employers, and is recognised by the Chartered Institute of Marketing for maximum exemptions against the CIM diploma examinations.

    Course content

    There is a core of mandatory business modules, in areas covering finance, strategic management, and human resource management, along with other specific marketing modules. You will be required to undertake a marketing dissertation.

    Additional support for international students

    MBA Marketing
    MBA Marketing is a further specialist MBA route for
    students who wish to customise their programme from a
    marketing perspective. It combines generic MBA material
    in addition to specialist coverage of the marketing function
    and contemporary marketing issues. MBA Marketing
    modules also carry some exemptions for students wishing
    to study later for the professional Chartered Institute of
    Marketing examinations

    Semester 1
    All MBA students (regardless of their
    chosen route) study FOUR core
    management modules. These are:
    • Human Resource Management
    • Marketing Management
    • Financial Analysis & Decision Making
    • Economic Environment of Business

    Semester 2
    Strategic Management
    (Studied by all MBA students.)
    In addition, students must choose a
    further THREE modules from a list of
    modules relevant to their named MBA
    award. These are indicated below:

    MBA General Management students
    study THREE modules namely:
    • Issues in Strategic Leadership
    Plus TWO further modules from
    • European Business
    • International Financial Markets
    Marketing Communications
    • Entrepreneurship and
    Small Business
    • International Business and
    Global Strategy

    MBA International Business students
    study THREE modules:
    • Critical Issues in Global Business
    Plus TWO further modules from
    • European Business
    • Asian Business and
    Global Challenge
    • International Marketing
    • International Business Law
    • International Business and
    Global Stratergy

    MBA Finance students study THREE
    modules namely:
    • Corporate Finance
    • Institutional Investments
    • International Financial Markets
    MBA Marketing students study THREE
    modules namely:
    • Marketing Planning
    • International Marketing
    • Marketing Communications

    Semester 3
    During the final semester all students
    will undertake a module on Research
    Methods and either a company
    internship or a dissertation in a
    specialist area relevant to their chosen
    MBA. In each case, the student will
    have an allocated staff member acting
    as their personal supervisor.

    If the dissertation is chosen, staff
    members will supervise dissertations
    that fall within their area of expertise or
    alternatively, staff will suggest topics
    which lie within their specialist expertise.

    Pattern and Mode of Attendance
    MBA General Management,
    MBA Finance, MBA International
    Business and MBA Marketing courses
    are all semester-based. There are two
    start dates each year.

    September Start
    Semester 1 September to December
    Semester 2 January to April
    Semester 3 May to September

    or

    January Start
    Semester 1 January to April
    Semester 2 May to July
    Semester 3 September to January
    * The Business School is currently developing
    an April/May start date from 2009 for a limited
    selection of MBA programmes.
