    Entry requirements The minimum age for entry is 16. A good general education, a range of interpersonal skills and a strong commitment to working with young children are fundamental qualities for entry. For younger applicants i.e. school leavers, a minimum of 4 GCSE passes grade D or above is required. These should include Maths and/or English. Two references will be required from the most recent educational establishment attended and previous employers. All applicants are expected to attend the College for interview/taster day. Places are offered on the outcome of results, a comprehension test and a personal interview. A CRB check is mandatory see above.

  • Course description
    General information

    This is a course for those who are interested in working with young children 0-16 years, in a supervised capacity.  The course will enable childcare workers to promote the care and education of young children working alongside other professionals, and in partnership with parents/carers and families.

    The Award/Certificate/Diploma in Childcare and Education is a one-year full time course made up of 4 core units and 1 option unit. These are related to the NVQs in Childcare and Education at Level 2. The course offers students the following opportunities: to gain a certificate after 1 year of study, to gain experience and develop skills in working with children, to achieve Key Skills in Communication, Application of number, Information Technology at levels 1, 2 or 3. To complete a further 2 years of study and gain the Diploma in Childcare & Education at Bromley College providing Merit or Distinction is gained at this level.

    Course content

    The course will consist of 6 core units and 1 option unit.

    Core Units:

        * An introduction to working with children
        * The developing child
        * Safe and healthy environment for children
        * Children and play
        * Communication and professional skills within childcare and education
        * The child care practitioner in the work place
        * Optional unit

    Practical work placements form 40% of the course. Students are placed in a different work setting each term to enable them to gain practical experience of work with babies and young children in families, playgroups, nurseries and schools.

    Teaching and assessment

    To gain the Award/Certificate/Diploma in Childcare and Education, candidates must produce the following evidence of practical competence, knowledge and understanding: Practice Evidence Record, Professional Development Profile, 5 Unit Assignments, Multiple Choice Question Paper and Key Skills at an appropriate level.

    There are both theoretical and practical elements to this programme, both are mandatory. It is therefore also a mandatory requirement that an enhanced CRB check is completed prior to entry. Any conviction or reprimand etc must be disclosed. This may well affect the outcome and employment prospects of this course.

    Progression

    Working in a supervised capacity with young children in either day care both full and part time or in schools, toy libraries etc.
