    General information

    This award gives an introduction to the type of knowledge and understanding required when working in childcare and education and playwork. It provides the opportunity to develop basic skills in caring for children which can be used on a personal basis.  It replaces the CACHE award of Caring for Young Children and is listed on the new framework of nationally accredited qualifications in early years education, childcare and playwork.

    Course content

    Seven Modules to be completed in order to gain the full award:

        * Personal Development,
        * Human Growth and Development
        * Food and Nutrition
        * Health and Safety Practices in the Home and Group Settings
        * Care of Children
        * Play and Practical Activities
        * Orientation to Work Programme.

    Teaching and assessment

    Portfolio tasks for units 2-6, a test set by the awarding body, a satisfactory report from personal tutor for unit 1 and a satisfactory Personal Action Plan for Unit 7.  Students must also achieve Key Skills at an appropriate level for this qualification.  A work placement, a mandatory part of the course, is usually arranged for the second and third term within the student's locality, but this can vary. Students are expected to gain a satisfactory report from the workplace supervisor.

    Placement for 1 day a week is optional in the third term,  therefore an Enhanced CRB check is essential . Any disclosures or previous convictions must be made to the tutors.

    Progression

    This course of study can lead to Award/Certificate or Diploma Level 2  in Childcare and Education providing that Distinctions are gained on the assessed units, the placement supervisors reports are favourable and attendance and punctuality are considered to be excellent.
